This Paradise is not a distant, utopian place or future. It is unbounded in time and space, built and rebuilt endlessly by those cast out: the queer, the other. Paradise asks: What is survival in a world with ever-ending apocalypses such as climate devastation, genocide, the stripping of human rights, xenophobia, and rampant capitalist greed? More specifically, how do those historically pushed to the margins build their own worlds and sense of paradise in order to survive, connect, and seek pleasure? Rather than frame Paradise strictly in terms of its relationship to enclosed, idealize garden spaces - evoking benign, historical tropes - the exhibition presents itself as an unruly space. Unruly as in: disorderly, wild, uncontrollable, disruptive, and disobedient. Terms that have been used against and to describe those of us who defy and resist normative standards and expectations. It is within this unruliness that this exhibition situates itself; it is here in untamed space that Paradise begins to take shape. Paradise brings together works by thirteen U.S.-based artists responding to the urgent labor of shaping something from nothing. Moving between installation, painting, video, and sculpture, they trouble and explore ways of world-building, resistance, relationality, and storytelling. Le Guin Volcano is an installation-based exhibition of new works by Jenn Sova curated with Jodi Darby. It is an exploration of rage; a geological survey of destruction at the hands of patriarchal violence. Sova weaves connections between organic materials such as moss, ash, rocks, and flowers with research and archival media depictions of violence and survival. Her research centers four women: Ana Mendieta, Aileen Wuornos, Anita Hill, and Joan of Arc. These women lived in different times, but all share the experience of their lives being destroyed by gendered violence, capitalism, and white supremacy. Gallery. The performance was to honor the late Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta on the 38th anniversary of her death. Invited guests were asked to participate in a ritual to cover Sova's body with rocks, take 38 collective breaths together, witness her erupt from the rocks and fill in the empty space with marigolds. The remnants of the performance were on view in the Paragon windows for three days, then the shades were lowered and the materials took new forms in the permanent installations for the duration of the exhibition, Volcano. The installation is a 6’ by 3’ dirt mound containing 34 (the age of the artist) live violets, installed in a basement gallery space for 6 weeks. traced your scent through the gloom is a desperate attempt to discover how much or how little care is needed to survive; no light, no circulating air, no water, no bodies, the violets sit alone in the dark until someone enters the room. Every Saturday Sova came to perform care for them by turning on the grow light above, setting up a phone to "go live", and then giving the plants care in the form of watering, singing, grooming, talking, etc. This documentation is a culmination of the Instagram Live feed edited with details of care given. Real time often includes periods of silence, reflection, growth, space, self-forgiveness, processing with loved ones, rest, and responsibility.” adrienne maree brown, Emergent Strategy (149) We're living in a time where our attention is more political than ever and has become a form of social currency. Between social media clicks and algorithms, 24-hour news cycles, endless streaming content, apps to ease every inconvenience, and expectations of being available at all times - digital distraction blurs our everyday interactions and confuses our relationships to labor, self, community, and empathy. Too Long; Didn’t Read (TL;DR) is coded internet language that exposes the attention culture that we accept as our new normal. TL;DR is an internet acronym signaling that whatever content follows could be long, tedious, and/or complex. This exhibition invites us to instead view TL;DR as a flag, warning us to pay attention, to be curious about what’s under the surface, and to decide, critically, what to invest our time in. Too Long; Didn’t Read brings together works by&nbsp; Jose Luis Benavides, Andi Crist, Francis Dot, Hale Ekinci, Hasler Gomez, Kelly Kristin Jones, and Yuyang Zhang. While the works range from textiles, ceramics, painting, text, and installation, each artist employs tactics of attention. Yuyang Zhang and Andi Crist use humor and vernacular imagery to disarm their biting critiques of propaganda and professionalism. Francis Dot’s twenty-foot installation Time|Ghost|Town inundates the viewer with hazy outlines of histories of violence and extraction, inviting us to draw connections that may or may not be apparent. Similarly, Jose Luis Benavides’ letters presented from his documentary short, Letters to Lost Loved Ones, reveal and amplifies stories that our society works to silence, of incarcerated folks sharing their experience, struggles, and life during COVID-19 through their own voices and handwritten letters and poems. Hasler Gomez and Kelly Kristin Jones pull us in with repetition, asking us what can be learned from objects and images that may appear straightforward but when in multiples expand our knowledge of offered histories. Weaving, stitching, and layering are tactics used by Hale Ekinci to bring us into conversations about gendered labor and immigrant identity in a tactile web to notice every decision. Too Long; Didn’t Read offers a moment IRL (in real life) to slow down and witness what’s lost in our hightened attention culture and the urgency it demands. family homes in the space of Rubus Discolor Project. Through installtion, the artist recalls her Grandmother’s home in Czechoslovakia, a country that no longer exists, her Mother’s childhood home lost in a fire, and her own childhood home which, through an act of bureaucratic renaming, cannot be found on any map. Using her memories as reference, Sova constructs sculptural works to rebuild pieces of her past while collaborating directly with the walls, floors, and corners of the house. Employing materials found on the property and beyond to connect with its history, each room becomes a link to a different generation. In the living room, a small house made of bricks and cinder blocks recalls the simplified elements of a child’s drawing. A crowd of plaster glove-shaped hands occupies the kitchen, inhibiting movement while reaching for something, though for what remains unclear.
